PLASTIC SURGERY ALTERNATIVES There are many alternatives to cosmetic surgery that cost a lot less in monetary and health terms. A furrowed brow can be ironed out, skin dermabrasion and peeling, botox, chemical peels and wrinkle filling. Many people can feel better about themselves because of the advantages of plastic surgery alternatives which take less time out of our busy lives and much less recovery time. We can all look and feel better without the obvious signs of surgery. |
| An alternative to a brow lift is to inject with botox. Botox is a chemical which causes muscle fibre to contract and this technique is used to freeze forehead frown lines and crows feet to make the skin smoother. The results of botox can be seen after five days and the effects will last between three and six months. It is possible to re educate our facial muscles during this time so that they are not used so much. During the time the botox is working, the muscles are not being used anyway so the lines and furrows become smaller. When the effects of the botox have worn off, repeat injections are needed. |

Dermabrasion: Skin peeling: This is a process of peeling a strip off the top layer of the skin complete with our wrinkles exposing new skin underneath which heals into a young, smooth, wrinkle free version. This procedure strips the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and part of the next layer (dermis) encouraging the skin to renew and produce collagen. This process has little impact on sagging or heavily lined skin. The disadvantage with dermabrasion and peeling is that it can produce enlarged pores, melanin discolouration and dark skins can become darker. Dermabrasion: Skin sanding: This is a method of sanding the skin and is particularly good for acne pits, acne scars and chickenpox scars. It is also good for those little lines around the lips and brown patches. Sometimes dermabrasion can be done at the same time as a chemical peel to produce better results. Dermabrasion is done under local anaesthetic and there will be bleeding and swelling and the skin will be painful for around a week after the procedure. A scab will appear after a couple of days and lift after ten days. It will take three to six months before the skin is back to normal and during this time the skin must be protected from sun and cold wind. Micro dermabrasion is a procedure where small silicone crystals are sand blasted gently across the skin, producing exfoliation and freshens the skin. Before a chemical peel, the skin must be treated for four weeks with a daily application of Retin A cream. The most common chemical peel is the TCA (trichloroalcetic acid) peel which is done as outpatient surgery. This peel is suitable as an anti ageing procedure but it may take three months for the redness to go away. TCA peel has the same disadvantages as dermabrasion, causing enlarges pores, discolouration and sun sensitivity. Light peeling is less dramatic. A very light mixture of TCA or a fruit acid AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) is used to exfoliate the skin, increasing skin cells, plumping up the epidermis and reducing liver spots. The peel can be left on the skin from a few minutes to overnight, it all depends on how long you have been advised to leave it on. It won't leave scabbing behind. Light peels produce a more youthful looking skin and can reduce small wrinkles and liver spots of face, hands and chest but as light peeling is a commercial beauty product the effects are less obvious. |
