COSMETIC SURGERY FOR MEN

Plastic surgery has long been thought only suitable for women, or maybe only women wanted it or men didn't claim to want it, either through embarrassment or didn't know it existed. The women's body has always been a topic of discussion in magazines or the media but cosmetic surgery for men is alive and well in today's world.

There are many types of plastic surgery suitable for men, penis enlargement, breast reduction and several for body building.

There many different plastic surgery procedures suitable for men.

Penis augmentation.

Very few men are technically under endowed but there are many men that think they are. Few men actually suffer from micropenis, short penis, which occurs when there is a lack of testosterone, the male hormone, in the body.

The average male erection is around 5 inches, so that makes it possible for men to have anything between a 4 and 7 inch male erection. Many men would say that 5 inches is too short, so by knowing that this is the average can help them to accept what they have got rather than opt for a risky operation.

The operation to lengthen the penis comprises of cutting the suspensory ligament which is found between the pubic bone and the top of the genitals (it holds the erect penis close to the abdomen). Once cut, the penis drops forward, exposed. The surgeon divides the ligament and attaches it lower down on the pubic bone and by doing this, it is claimed, extends the penis by around 20-50%. The side effect is that the penis may stick out rather than up.

To fatten the penis, fat needs to be injected. This fat is often liposuctioned from the stomach wall and injected into the base of an erect penis. Only around 20% remains and the rest is absorbed but the operation can be repeated after 6 months if required. Fat injections can cause scarring and leave a knobbly surface on the penis so a dermal fat graft may be needed.

Surgery to the penis can cause loss of sensation and infections which can cause psychological distress which can lead to impotence. Men should be reassured by their partners that the size of their penis doesn't matter, it is what they do with it that does.

Breast reduction for men.

Another common cosmetic surgery operation for men  is Gynaecomastia. This is the condition of increased breast size in men which diet or exercise will not remove. Around 1 in 3 boys at puberty will have gynaecomastia which they grow out of but some adolescents or men particularly those overweight can have quite large breasts and this can cause severe stress.

The surgeon will examine the breasts to decide whether they are fatty or glandular breasts.

Fat in breasts is removed by liposuction, from the coloured part around the nipple (areola) or the armpit. A compression vest is worn for a month after surgery so that the skin contracts properly.

Glandular tissue in breasts will have to be cut out. The operation is done in a day under general anaesthetic by making a small incision halfway round the areola and cutting out the glandular tissue. Recovery period is 10 days and bruising usually lasts for 3 weeks.

The side effects are that if the surgeon takes too much tissue, the breast can look too flat and if there is a lot of skin to contract you could be left with an empty pouch that looks like the breasts or lack of sensation in the nipple.
