BREAST RESHAPING AND IMPLANT SURGERY

There are always some women that are not happy with their breasts. They may be too small naturally or after weight loss and need implants, or one may be bigger than the other and need reshaping. Our breast shape is determined by our genes, by our build or by artificial hormones such as the pill. After childbirth, some women find that because the supporting ligaments have not contracted back after pregnancy and lactation, their breasts are much larger. Post menopausal women, because the glandular tissue has shrunk and lost elasticity, can find their breasts have changed shape and are smaller and drooping. Breast reshaping can help.

Breast implants can last for at least ten years. Around eight percent of breast implants will leak and this usually happens within a year after surgery. If there is a leakage they might have to be removed. You should tell the nurse or doctor that you have breast implants if you are intending to breastfeed or having a mammogram.

Mammoplasty, breast reshaping, and breast augmentation, implants, can enhance the size and shape of the breasts for the better and possibly change the way you live your life.

Some women want their breasts made bigger because they are virtually flat chested or their breasts have shrunk or drooped with age. This process is called breast augmentation. If the nipple is below the breast near the crease the breast can be lifted rather than enlarged.

Breast enlargement can restore confidence and change the lives of women that were too embarrassed to go on the beach or go out in summer tops and who found it impossible to find clothes to fit properly.

Implants have become very popular over the last ten years as many models and media stars have opted for breast implants to increase their breast size. Some women need breast implants as part of reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy operation

Breast implants consist of a silicone bag filled with liquid silicone, cohesive silicone jelly or saline.

Silicone implants came from America in the 1960's and for 30 years was used in preference to saline. Silicone gel implants have been available here in the UK since 1962, and it is estimated that over 10,000 implants are now carried out every year and 80% are silicone gel implants. Hydrogel or Soya bean oil filled implants and titanium coated implants are not available in the U.K. There is no evidence to suggest there is any health risk link to breast cancer with silicone implants.

Cohesive silicone implants have a strong outer layer that helps to prevent the leakage that can often occur with the silicone implant. Because the outer surface consists of several layers, if the implant ruptures, the gel has a better chance of not leaking out and the breast does not lose it's shape. This type of implant keeps it's shape better and there is less chance of wrinkling or folding.

Saline implants have a tough semi permeable elastic silicone shell. Because they are filled with saline, which is similar in consistancy to body fluids, it will be absorbed into the body should there be a leakage or burst, reducing any risk.

Breast implant surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic usually with an overnight stay although sometimes it is possible to go home the same day.

There are two types of surgical cut: Subglandular, the implant goes between the chest and breast muscle and Submuscular, the implant goes behind the chest muscle.

There are three types of incision: Periareolar, the incision is around the nipples but this type of incision could cause problems for younger women who may want to breast feed, Inframmory, the incision is made underneath the breast and Axillary, this incision is made in the armpit area.

Although, as you would expect there will be lots of swelling and discomfort and the breasts may feel harder to the touch but this passes after a few weeks.

Although most women find the recovery is without problems, you should consult your doctor if the swelling persists or you have any pain.
