BREAST IMPLANT AND ENLARGEMENT SURGERY There are always some women that aren't happy with their breasts, they may be too big, and need implants, or too small or non symmetrical. Breast implant surgery is the most popular option for most of us. Our breast shape is determined by our genes or by our build, it can pass generations, but always reappears, or by artificial hormones such as the pill. After childbirth, because the supporting ligaments have not contracted back after pregnancy or after the menopause, some women find their breast shape has changed because the glandular tissue has shrunk and lost elasticity, this is where breast implant surgery can help.

Breast implant surgery has become more
refined due to the changes in cosmetic surgery procedures. More and more
women are deciding on plastic surgery because it has become much safer.
We have heard many scare stories about leaking implants and those women
who's implants are not leaking are worried in case they do. Polyurethane coated implants were removed from the market in 1991 after fears of a carcinogenic risk from the polyurethane breaking down in the breast. In 2005 this process was reintroduced after a decision that the process was actually safe. How does this make us feel if we had this type of implant? Millions of women have breast implants that they are happy with and problem free. Read on for more information. |

Breast implants consist of a silicone bag
filled with liquid silicone, cohesive silicone jelly or saline. Silicone
implants came from America in the 1960's and for 30 years was used in
preference to saline.
A few years ago there was a health scare, a link was claimed, by lawyers, between silicone and breast cancer and a few defects in babies was attributed to breast silicone implants. Recently, lawyers claimed a link between silicone implants and ME and rheumatoid arthritis, with symptoms such as fatigue, lymph node swellings and memory problems. These problems were more common in women whose silicone implants had ruptured. The fear of silicone leaking out in the body meant that they stopped doing most of the silicone implants in America. Saline was used instead but saline implants tended to wrinkle as the bags were not completely full and women could see the wrinkles through their skin. Now, it is generally thought that silicone implants are safe and nothing to do with the earlier health scares, the implants are much stronger than before so the bags cannot split. If you decide to have breast augmentation, the surgeon choice is very important. Like every cosmetic surgery, we have to be happy that the surgeon knows what he is doing and we are sure of what we want. The surgeon will check the breasts for symmetry because if they are both different sizes, a bigger implant will be needed for one breast to get both the same size. The surgeon will also check for stretch marks because implants will not remove stretch marks, although many think they do. Bring a bra so that the surgeon can fit the implant to the bra size as this is a better measurement than saying '36D please'. Most women are very happy and are not aware of the implants but there is high risk of some loss of sensation in the breasts, the bigger the implant, the higher chance of some nerve damage. It is impossible to predict how much cleavage the breasts will produce and the scar tissue will take around six months to heal. The breasts will feel hard and unnatural at first but then soften up. If the breast changes shape you should see a doctor in case the implant has ruptured and this can be checked by a breast X ray, mammography. Once the decision has been made and you have had breast implant surgery, remember there is a slight risk in every surgery but complications are rare, so enjoy the new breasts and go out and enjoy yourselves.
